Old football boots wanted for Africa

THE Rotary Club of Scarborough is appealing for young footballers to join a nationwide campaign to get as many pairs of old boots as possible to send to Africa.

It is hoped that the initiative will help youngsters in Africa to get as much enjoyment from the game as children in the UK.

A club spokesman said: “Please save your old boots. This will be a wonderful opportunity for these African children to own a pair of football boots like you. This will also help to improve these children’s health in these countries.

“So if you got a new pair of boots for Christmas remember the children not so lucky as you.”

Old and unwanted pairs of football boots can be taken to the YMCA in St Thomas Street and handed into reception for attention of The Rotary Club of Scarborough.

The appeal is being sponsored by Stoneacre/Polar Ford and by Sir Richard Branson – who will fly the boots to Africa free of charge.

Cheers Santa - You've made your sleigh pay

SCARBOROUGH Lions have brought some festive cheer to the town thanks to their annual Santa sleigh tour.

The club are embarking on a journey right across the town in the run up to Christmas, raising money for local charities and smiles from local people in the process.

After encountering some difficulty with the snow and ice in Burniston and Cloughton, the club enjoyed a good day at Proudfoot’s, in Newby, and treasurer Roy Chambers said he was delighted with the response to the cause.

He said: “So far the people of Scarborough have been welcoming and generous and everyone joins in.

“Rudolph and Santa always attracts people and the music has brought some festive cheer.”

Mr Chambers said the club was on track to beat the £5,600 it raised last year and would be holding a meeting to discuss which charities and organisations will receive the donations.

He added: “We are always hoping to beat last year’s figure, especially as the years go on, there are more and more people who are in need of our help.

“Our volunteers really enjoy themselves with this fundraising event; there is a lot of satisfaction and fun to be had and they are putting something back into the community.”

The sleigh will be in Scalby village tonight and will also make appearances tomorrow at Proudfoots, Eastfield; Friday at Irton, Crossgates and Seamer; Saturday, Sainsbury’s; December 20, Proudfoots, Seamer; December 21 Morrisons; December 22, Morrisons and December 23, Sainsbury’s.

Santas stroll along seafront

ROYAL Albert Drive and Marine Drive were a sea of red and white as hundreds of festive Santas took part in a fundraising event for St Catherine’s Hospice yesterday.

This year’s Santa Dash was turned into a stroll – because of safety concerns over the wet conditions – but a few brave souls ran towards the finish line.

The event was officially started by mayor Cllr Hazel Lynskey. It began at the Sands Complex at 11am and the route covered the 1.5 miles to the Toll House.

Sue Sanderson, who originally left Scarborough in 1981, was dressed as an elf and had travelled all the way from Lyons in France to take part. She said: “We were coming to see our son who studies in Hull. It’s such a good charity that we thought we’d like to do it. We were just worried about the snow on the way up.”

Most of the entrants were dressed as Father Christmas but Julie Jackson, from Newby, was a little different because she was dressed as a Christmas Tree. She said she was worried that passing dogs might take a shine to her.
