As the current government slices up the country into LEPs (that’s Local Enterprise Partnerships) and scrap the RDA’s (Regional Development Agencies – ours was Yorkshire Forward) it’s a good time for towns and cities in the region to look back at how they’ve spent the big pots of regeneration money that YF dished out, because that kind of cash is going to be thin on the ground for the next few years. YF called it ‘Renaissance’, here in Scarborough we never quite settled on a name for it (’Town Team’, ‘Scarborough’s Future’ and ‘Renaissance’ were all interchangeable) but in a nutshell (or should that be seashell?) it was the people of the town getting a genuine say in how regeneration money should be spent. YOUNSTERS can keep busy in their half-term break by taking part in a variety of activity days.
North Yorkshire County Council’s Extended Schools Services is once again putting on a number of workshops.The activities kick-off on Monday when there will be a magic workshop at Barrowcliff Junior School from 10am to 3pm. The session is run by Steve Brailsford and costs £10. It is aimed at children aged six to 14.There will also be a Brazilian football class at Barrowcliff Junior School from 10am to 3pm. This again costs £10 and is for children aged four to 14.A drama session will be held at the Stephen Joseph Theatre from 10am to 3pm for youngsters aged four to 14.Children can learn all about the theatre and pick up new acting skills as well as take part in roleplay games.Next Tuesday there will be a goalball session at Newby and Scalby School from 10.30am to noon. The sessions costs £2 and are for children aged 10 to 16.There will also be a Save a Mate session run by the British Red Cross at Newby and Scalby School from 10am to 3pm.The workshop, which costs £3, is for children aged eight to 14 and they will get the chance to learn about first aid and pick up important skills.Next Wednesday there will be a golf class at Snainton Golf Centre from 10am to 3pm. The session gives youngsters aged four to 14 the chance to learn new skills and techniques. The day costs £10.Next Thursday there will be a Get Active session at Barrowcliff Junior School from 10am to 3pm. There will be a variety of games and activities taking place for children aged six to 14. The session costs £10.A drama workshop will take place at Stephen Joseph Theatre from 10am to 3pm for youngsters aged four to 14. This will again cost £10.An Artful workshop will take place at Barrowcliff Junior School from 10am to 3pm for children aged six to 14. The session costs £10 and will give youngsters the chance to make Halloween masks and bouncy bats.There will also be a fun day with Magic Mike on the Thursday at the Briercliffe Children’s Centre from 9.30am to 11.30am for families with children under five. This session is free.Next Friday, October 30, there will be another fun day with Magic Mike at Brompton Village Hall from 9.30am to 11.30am.There will be a Scarborough’s Got Talent workshop at the Hatton School of Performing Arts, in Durham Street, from 10am to 3pm. The session is for children aged four to 14 and costs £10.

YOUNGSTERS in Scarborough can enjoy an action packed half-term – thanks to Scarborough Museums Trust.
It is offering a number of fun activities which are free for under 18s and part of a special offer giving people in the town a two-for-one deal on attractions. The fun begins with The Big Fossil Drawer workshop on Saturday from 11am to 4pm at the The Rotunda, The William Smith Museum of Geology. Part of The Campaign for Drawing's Big Draw, the workshop gives youngsters the chance to produce a large scale drawer full of fossils. The week also includes Dinosaur hunting with three fossil hunts on Sunday, Monday and next Tuesday.Groups for the hunt meet at Reighton Sands Holiday Park at 1pm on Sunday, with meetings at the slipway to the beach at Sandsend at 1.30pm on Monday and and the slipway to the beach at Runswick Bay on Tuesday at 2pm.Each fossil hunt lasts around two hours.Scarborough's famous ancestor Gristhorpe Man will be providing an insight into the Bronze Age next Wednesday, October 28. The Bringing Bronze to Life workshop will be offering children the chance to work with artefacts buried with Gristhorpe Man to find out more about forensic science and the workshop starts at 11am at The Rotunda and runs until 4pm.Scarborough Art Gallery is holding a workshop investigating the language of the fan and will give participants the chance to produce two self portraits for their very own fan on Thursday October 29 from 11am to 4pm.The week is guaranteed to end on a spooky note at the Art Gallery on Saturday October 31 as youngsters can create their own Halloween masks, with children who go in fancy dress getting a tricky treat.Things to do - 8th OctoberSpirit of the Dance.
