Coastival puts area on the map

MUSIC, light, lanterns and gigantic creatures from the darkest of prehistoric ages got the weekend’s Coastival arts event off to an eye-catching start.

And with top acts such as The Levellers and comedians Jon Richardson and Shappi Khorsandi, organisers were hoping to build on the success of the original event two years ago.

Festival organiser Wendy Clews said that she was impressed with the opening parade which was a “breathtaking” sight.

She said: “So many children and their families were there and The Levellers was a brilliant gig to kick things off.

“It’s the first gig they’ve done this year and they were quite nervous about it doing those songs for the first time. They were excited and a bit nervous.

“They had a great time and they said that they definitely want to come back to Scarborough on their next tour.”

Wendy added that the festival was a “bit different” and organisers had tried to develop it from lessons learned during the first one in 2009.

Tourism Minister praises Scarborough

SCARBOROUGH'S status as an eminent seaside resort has received a major boost after the town earned high praise from the country's Tourism Minister.

John Penrose visited Scarborough as part of a whistle-stop tour of Britain and admitted to being "amazed" by its attractions.

Mr Penrose's trip, which included the Open Air Theatre as its centrepiece, was designed to give him an insight into a traditional seaside town ahead of a government report on increasing tourism in Britain.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, who helped arrange the visit, said it was a coup to attract someone of Mr Penrose's calibre to the town.

He said: "It was more of a fact finding mission and a chance for him to come and see what Scarborough had to offer.

"Being the MP for Weston-Super-Mare he comes from a seaside resort but was taken by how Scarborough was quite different from his home town.

"He was certainly impressed by Scarborough's standing as the first seaside resort, he liked the look of the town and thought the Open Air Theatre was amazing. We took him on to the stage area and he thought that was quite awe-inspiring.

"I don't know the last time a Tourism Minister came Scarborough and we were really pleased he could visit."

Future funding for Welcome to Yorkshire is under review.

Natural History Museum comes to Scarborough 17th June

NHM logo

The first Scarborough Fossil Festival will open its doors on Thursday 17 June with a lecture at Westwood Theatre given by Professor Pete Rawson, the Chair of Scarborough Museums Trust.  Pete will start, what is planned to be a truly palaeontological feast of events explaining how our unique coastline is such a geological gem.

Staff from the Natural History Museum in London will be based at Scarborough Collections at Woodend where the public can come along and speak to them directly, have their own fossils identified and get the chance to see some very rare geological specimens that they have brought up from London.

A whole series of talks will be taking place at Westwood Theatre (Yorkshire Coast College) including ‘Pictures from the Past’ by Dr Martin Munt where he will look at how we go about recreating what dinosaurs looked like and what the world looked like 150 million years ago!

Dr Tim Ewin, also from the Natural History Museum in London will deliver a talk on Scelidosaurus, which is Britain’s best preserved dinosaur. It lived 195 million years ago and was an armour plated plant eater.  Dr Ewin will explore what we know about it from its fossil remains and how we can tell what it ate, how it lived and what it looked like when it was alive.

As well as the talks and fossil identification sessions the North East Yorkshire Geology Trust will be based at Scarborough Library where you will be able to make your own dinosaurs, learn more about your favourite dinosaurs and which ones lived in our area as well as actually buy fossils at the Fossil Fayre based at the Library on the Saturday 19 June.

Rotunda

The Scarborough Art Gallery will also be joining in the fun with fossil craft and a series of walks will be taking place where participants can learn about the geology of the South Bay or take part in a William Smith inspired walk along the Castle headland.  All the walks will start at the Rotunda at 10.30am and 2.30pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Entry is free at most venues, the special Fossil Festival leaflet gives details of how you can collect stamps for both free entry to the Rotunda and the chance for kids to go free to the Sea Life Centre so you can see the living fossils on display there.

Even if you’ve never been interested in ancient rocks there will be something for everyone to explore, learn, engage, interact and generally have a great experience.

Full details can be downloaded here.
