Grand Hall £6.5m refurb on trackYork & Scarborough Conferences has said work on the £6.5m refurbishment of Scarborough’s Spa is well underway and on course for completion in spring 2011. The project involves alterations to the Spa’s Grand Hall alongside other areas of the Grade-II Victorian building. After the refurbishment, the Spa will have the capacity to host more than 1,600 delegates with a 21,500 sq ft exhibition space. Janet Deacon, tourism manager for Scarborough Borough Council, said: "The redevelopment of the venue is already resulting in a great deal of interest from new customers, especially from organisers who are looking at the space as a potential venue for their next event. "The venue is still very much open for business and throughout this summer we have hosted some fantastic events as well as a full programme of entertainment." Laura Freer, marketing manager for York & Scarborough Conferences, added: "The Scarborough Spa certainly has the wow-factor, offering Victorian opulence with the facilities and technical services needed to deliver an exceptional conference or event. The renovation is a fantastic development for Scarborough, creating a number of new flexible meeting spaces for our venue portfolio. "We are looking forward to working with the team at the Spa to bring world-class events and businesses to the region." John Penrose visited Scarborough as part of a whistle-stop tour of Britain and admitted to being "amazed" by its attractions. Mr Penrose's trip, which included the Open Air Theatre as its centrepiece, was designed to give him an insight into a traditional seaside town ahead of a government report on increasing tourism in Britain.Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, who helped arrange the visit, said it was a coup to attract someone of Mr Penrose's calibre to the town.He said: "It was more of a fact finding mission and a chance for him to come and see what Scarborough had to offer."Being the MP for Weston-Super-Mare he comes from a seaside resort but was taken by how Scarborough was quite different from his home town."He was certainly impressed by Scarborough's standing as the first seaside resort, he liked the look of the town and thought the Open Air Theatre was amazing. We took him on to the stage area and he thought that was quite awe-inspiring. "I don't know the last time a Tourism Minister came Scarborough and we were really pleased he could visit."Future funding for Welcome to Yorkshire is under review.Via Scarborough Evening NewsMPUMinCharsCutOff:210 PageLength:1177MPUPositionFromStart:250 MPUPositionRange:1000 hasVideoOrImage:False --> Badly Drawn Boy - Scarborough SpaBADLY Drawn Boy will open his first tour in three years on October 16 at the Spa Theatre, Scarborough. The seven-date tour coincides with the October 4 release of his new album, It’s What I’m Thinking Pt.1 – Photographing Snowflakes, preceded by the single Too Many Miracles on September 27. The album resulted from an unprecedented wave of creativity for Badly Drawn Boy, alias the woolly hat-wearing Damon Gough, sparked by penning the soundtrack to Caroline Aherne’s television drama The Fattest Man In Britain last year. He decided the best way to capture this surge, and give the songs the exposure they deserved, was to release a trilogy of albums under the title of It’s What I’m Thinking. Watch this space for details of parts two and three. “It feels like a new beginning in a lot of ways,” says a refreshed and revitalised Gough. “It definitely feels like I’m on a roll.” The Scarborough show is being staged by Mr H Presents, alias York music promoter Tim Hornsby.
