MUSIC, light, lanterns and gigantic creatures from the darkest of prehistoric ages got the weekend’s Coastival arts event off to an eye-catching start.

And with top acts such as The Levellers and comedians Jon Richardson and Shappi Khorsandi, organisers were hoping to build on the success of the original event two years ago.

Festival organiser Wendy Clews said that she was impressed with the opening parade which was a “breathtaking” sight.

She said: “So many children and their families were there and The Levellers was a brilliant gig to kick things off.

“It’s the first gig they’ve done this year and they were quite nervous about it doing those songs for the first time. They were excited and a bit nervous.

“They had a great time and they said that they definitely want to come back to Scarborough on their next tour.”

Wendy added that the festival was a “bit different” and organisers had tried to develop it from lessons learned during the first one in 2009.

Scarborough Art Gallery

Scarborough Art Gallery is situated in Scarborough’s beautiful Crescent Gardens. From attic to basement we seek to inspire; on our ground floor we have a selection of well loved favourites from our permanent collection, a shop and Coffee Lounge where we host temporary exhibitions. On the first floor we offer both home grown and national touring exhibitions. Children are welcome throughout the Gallery.

The Rotunda

The Rotunda is one of the oldest purpose-built museums in Britain, built in 1829 to the specifications of William Smith – the father of English geology. Following major investment and a two year renovation the museum now has all the interactive technologies demanded of a modern-day museum.

Scarborough Collections

Scarborough Collections is the name used for everything that Scarborough Museums Trust does inside Woodend Creative Workspace. This includes family fun days, museum store tours, lecture series, workshops and opportunities for researchers to work with the collections.

 On this expert led fossil hunt you will find fossilised creatures that once filled the oceans during the Lower Jurassic period. No booking required. Meet on the slipway to the beach

Rotunda Family Fun Day - Egg Hunt

Wednesday 14 April, 11am-4pm

Rotunda Family Fun Days are aimed at the entire family. Each one will explore a different aspect of the museum through a combination of science and art. This event will also include a novel 'hunt' around the museum, but will it be chocolate eggs that are the ultimate treasure? No booking required.

Arty Party at Scarborough Art Gallery

Thursday 15 April, 11 – 1pm and 2 - 4pm

How would you make a bathing costume? Costume lecturers from Yorkshire Coast College, will be setting up a temporary design studio in the Family Gallery. They will be showing participants how to make simple beach wear from paper! Come along and make a ‘one-wear-only’ bathing suit. No booking required.
